today is 12 august 2006.
fox game of the week . . . dodgers killing the giants. yep, it was good. wilson benemit in the lineup--means the dodgers win. you tell me of any better positive correlation than this. benemit starting for the dodgers--13 for 13. when he takes the day off, the dodgers are 0-1. someone needs to tell grady little not to jinx the team!
computer tragedy of the week . . . accidental deletion. sad, yet true--this did happen to me. on my linux machine nonetheless. one directory was of particular grief--photographs from jan to aug . . . the only thing i didn't have backups for was about a dozen directories full of jpgs.
i googled if there was anyway of remedy this--i guess the reiser file system that suse uses has no undelete--and is particularly difficult to restore. but there's was something on google that allowed me to try to rebuild some directory tree . . . or something like that. (i really didn't have a clue what i was doing). anyway, i switched to knoppix to help rescue the data.
anyway, i'm on electron the old toshiba running knoppix live cd, and i've got the old hd mounted. i'm starting to see the data--but konquerer (the linux equivalent of windows explorer) won't let me touch the recovery files unless i was logged in as root.
no problem . . . but logging in as root switched konquerer to german. no lie. at least the icons were still understandable. i had to laugh. i lost data--so the time of crying was over.
needless to say, i did recover most of the photos--about 90% of them. good enough for me.
by the way, inbox.com has massive storage. i'm using it now for photo sharing. Click here to see photos!
