today is friday 27 august 2004.

it's rainy and cold. a "dog nose day."

i told the charisian presence last night that i have a "pit bull worldview." if you show fear, that they'll get you. if you show no fear, than all is good. applies to all areas of life--from learning greek, to ordering food at carl's jr.

talking about vicious animals . . . take a look at this . . .

Monk seal on Kaua'i bites pushy tourist in the butt

Advertiser Kaua'i Bureau

PO'IPU, Kaua'i — One monk seal bit a tourist on the buttock yesterday after being shoved.

A mother Hawaiian monk seal and her pup play in the surf at Kaua'i's Po'ipu Beach Park. The pup is 24 days old today. Another pair of seals, a mother and her 3-week-old pup, kept hundreds of visitors and residents off the beach.

What's happening at Po'ipu Beach is an example of the challenges that remain in efforts to keep endangered Hawaiian monk seals and people apart.

The 64-year-old man who was bitten was not seriously hurt in the encounter, which took place in the water fronting the Sheraton Kaua'i Hotel. No stitches were required, but he got a tetanus shot and antibiotics.

"The individual got aggressive with the seal. He was trying to get to shore and he tried to push the seal away. I talked to him afterwards, and he was more embarrassed than anything," said Brad Ryon, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries marine biologist.
The biting incident was only the second known on Kaua'i. Three years ago, a nursing mother seal snapped at the hindquarters of a swimmer who got a little too close to her pup. The mother seal is the same one that had another pup on Po'ipu Beach this year.

The mom hasn't gone after any humans this year, but she wrestled aggressively yesterday morning with a young male seal that approached her 23-day-old pup. The male may have been the same one that bit the tourist.

For all of yesterday's activity, this year hasn't been a really big seal year. In some years, as many as five big seals have hauled out on the south Kaua'i beach at the same time.
Wildlife officials and a team of 86 trained volunteers keep a watch on the mother and pup, answering visitors' questions, and explaining why they've roped off the beach where the seals are present.

"The mothers don't take well to disturbance," said Jean Souza, Kaua'i manager of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

Most of the folks viewing the seals about noon yesterday seemed happy to leave the beach to the animals.

"It's cool. It's an animal and we should take care of them," said Jim Goodrich of Palo Alto, Calif.
Wailua resident Alejandro Hernandez brought his nephew, Alex Lopez of Makakilo, to the beach specifically to see the seals.

"It's good. It's time for humans to do something for endangered species. I feel sorry for the tourists who come so far to visit a safe beach, but I think it's worth it," Hernandez said.
Most visitors do manage to get to the beach, though, because of a new cooperation between wildlife officials, state and county governments, volunteers and the local visitor industry, said Margy Parker, executive director of the Po'ipu Beach Resort Association. The seal teams try to act quickly to open beaches when the seals have swum away from them.

"This year, there's a remarkable cooperation going on. Every time they change the part of the beach that's closed, they call me, and I blast e-mail to about 60 resort properties in the area, including every hotel and condominium project, vacation rentals, time shares and little inns," Parker said.

Yesterday, visitors could picnic on the grass at the beach park, and if they wanted to swim, they had only to walk a few dozen yards to the east, to the beach fronting the Marriott Waiohai Resort. And for most yesterday, that didn't seem too far to go.

today is monday 23 august 2004.

today is inservice . . . so much fun it takes a line in my blog.

the dodgers lost in montreal. i tell you, it's getting from good to bad real quick. now they're staring to play flat.

charisian presence noted that i abandoned her to look a toshiba notebook the other day. . . that's ok--reminds me of the time the charisian presence abandoned me for a scoop of ice cream . . .

note to self--peanut better cookies are melvinistic.

pit bull in wahiawa got shot in the face . . . not mom's pit bull, though. actually orbit is the more vicious one.

Saturday, August 21, 2004

today is saturday 21 august 2004.

major irritant in life--when people use stupid phrases. for example, "dress casually." what the mess does that mean? collared shirt, a coat but no tie, jeans and dodgers shirt, a loin cloth but no slippers?

another stupid phrase--"as soon as possible." yeah, i tell these people that i'll get back to them "later" (which in the hawaiian frame of mind means any time in the future).

which reminds me in the hawaiian time frame that "the other day" means anything in the past. for example, i may say "i was at your restaurant the other day." what i mean is that i've been there before (anytime in the past).

big cat chase is no longer a concern in hawaii . . . what wildlife officials these days are chasing down brown tree snakes. bad news.

l & l recently opened their 100th store in the bay area. they plan on opening a new restaurant one a week for the rest of the year. if you have $39,000 for the franchise license plus an additional $225,000 to $475,000 laying out--let me know and i'll have help you add more than a hawaiian flavor to your menu!

don't start with the dodgers . . . maybe i'll blog that gagne is doing good--so perhaps he won't be mortal again.

Friday, August 20, 2004

today is friday 20 august 2004.

no lie--in honolulu, keep a close eye on your pet. kitv news reports people using pets for meat. i hope they don't get orbit.

joe kennedy of the rockies and jason kendall of the pirates duked it out the other night--and both getting somewhat sizeable suspension. yes folks--the rockies have found their archrivalry --it's with pittsburgh!

gotta love the group that is attacking john kerry on his war record. they back the republicans--but in fact as quoted on cbs news, "we just don't like john kerry--and we don't care who we align with--as long as it's against john kerry."

the rudolf giuliani book leadership is pretty hip. getting to the chapter on "reflect, then decide." that's my new statement--"let me reflect."

the dodgers are a mess. the lead is down to 4.5 games. this is the smallest margin since the holey trades of a few weeks back. is elmer dessens going to be the bridge of starting pitching to gagn? and the scary thing is gagne the last two night . . . two years of invincibility, and the last two nights hadji's dodger fans have seen a blown save and lost from the man with a goatie . . .

leadership meeting at church. i have music of iz kamakawiwo'ole. someone asked if he was a sumo wrestler--"no. actually the sumo wrestler (i think it was konishiki) started rapping after he got done with sumo."

Thursday, August 19, 2004

today is still thursday 19 aug 2004. special second blog.

just had to add some extra thoughts. watching the games in athens, how the mess does table tennis become an olympic sport?

talking about sports, i already agree that cheerleading cannot and never should be considered a sport . . . but sumo definitely is a sport--those guys can do the splits, and they wear skimpier outfits than cheerleaders.

and another sport--bass fishing. and maybe catfish fishing. but not trout fishing.

gagne blew another save. greivous. the bullpen is a mess with dreifort (doesn't matter if he's injured or not).
today is thursday 19 august 2004.

olympics started last week. so exciting it takes a line in my blog. but i admit, i'd rather be in rainy denver than 110-degree athens any day.

the lawn sprinklers at the charis's place freaks me out. i know its coming . . . and when they go off, they still freak me out.

gagne blew his second save last night. the dodger bullpen is in shambles. but i guess this all doesn't matter as long as they remain in first.

Saturday, August 14, 2004

today is saturday 14 august 2004.

remind me to use my chick-fil-a coupon before the end of the month.

olympics started yesterday . . . i guess it's exciting . . . exciting enough to take a line in my blog.

dodgers and cubbies on fox. great game--except the dodgers lost. crazy how good kerry wood was . . . not that ishii was bad (for once).

Charisian cookies . . . very yummy!

Friday, August 13, 2004

today is friday 13 august 2004.

why not a twist on tv . . . how about reversing the plots . . . like lassie. instead of having lassie saving timmy, have timmy save lassie?

the dodgers bullpen got toasted last nigh . . . i tell you, if mota were there, the dodgers might have won . . .

julia childs died today . . . everyone hold up your spatula in salute . . .

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

today is chtoosdeh 10 august 2004.

remind me to use my chick-fil-a coupon before the end of the month.

the big news in denver this weekend is elway making the football hall of fame. so exciting it takes a line in my blog.

so there's an "elway" banner in cherry creek--i think it's a restaurant. so exciting it takes another line in my blog . . .

what would be an exciting thing is a restaurant called "gagne's." of course, they would have only desserts--the best way to close an evening or a meal. (this by the way, is a charisian idea!)

why is it that atlanta bread company has a location here in denver. does atlanta have a "denver bread company?"

last night i went to l and l . . . yes, hawaiian barbeque in denver! hip stuff . . . this will be my new monthly habit. only bad thing is i have to drive all the way to aurora--funny thing is i use up a bit of gas driving cross-town for a chicken katsu plate and spam musubi . . . but well worth it.

hawaiian sun pineapple orange drink introduced in the charisian presense--the same great taste since i was a little melvin . . . almost reminds me of fishcake a little bit.

l and l even has saimin.

Monday, August 09, 2004

today is monday 09 august 2004.

remind me to use my chick-fil-a coupon before the end of the month.

finally i got a king soopers receipt coupon for $3 rockies tickets. bad thing is the rox are pretty much out of town the rest of the month. the series with the mets and expos are left . . . what a tough choice.

the blue men are 6.5 games up. yup, six and a half. my dodgers are doing well.

why is it that boston market is everywhere? is there actually a boston market in boston? or can i even think that there's a "denver market" in boston?

Friday, August 06, 2004

today is friday 06 august 2004.

remind to use my other chick-fil-a coupon before the end of the month.

i don't get the u-haul billboards. why the mess do i care if there's a moving special to phoenix? why the mess would i want to move to phoenix?

and yes "my dodgers" are streaking. streaking bad. check the standings--6.5 games up is remarkable.

Wednesday, August 04, 2004

today is wednesday 04 august 2004.

don't get me started on the dodger trades . . . i think depotesta is nuts. but i believe this whole mess was a scheme to cut payroll. the team depodesta inherited wasn't built for power--it was built for creative scoring. getting rid of roberts is nuts. getting rid of mota is nuts. getting rid of lo duca is nuts. depodesta has a power mentality--hence ross behind the plate. hence steve finley instead of roberts. if the dodgers start to slide--then yes depodesta is nuts. if they continue to win --then maybe i'm the one that's nuts.

nonetheless, "my dodgers" continue their winning ways. beat the pirates last night.

i've got a new york mets shirt that incites some sort of comment every single time i wear it. and i kid you not--every single time i wear it. and the comments usually don't come from people that know me . . . case in point, yesterday i'm hanging out at t-mobile . . . some guy asks me if i was a mets fan--the dude was from the bronx.

and when i was at spicy pickle--when they're preparing my order, i'm known not by name but by shirt (mets).

even when i wore my mets shirt in hawaii--these tourists thought i was new york.

but i guess it doesn't help that i keep up with the team.

i took the same "what kind of dog are you" test that hadj took--and yes i'm a rottweiler also.
